StivorLing – The Linguistic Archive of Stivor aims to preserve the rich linguistic heritage of the Stivor variety. The project collects audio/video recordings and photographs to make this variety and the traditions it preserves accessible to all members of the Stivor community, wherever they live, as well as to researchers interested in studying the language and customs of this small community.

The Stivor Variety

A variety of the Venetan dialect spoken in the Trentino region (Valsugana), brought to present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina by the inhabitants of Stivor in the early 1880s. The Stivor variety bears witness to centuries of contact between Romance and Slavic populations and represents a rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, the Stivor variety is critically endangered. It is spoken by only about ten inhabitants of the village of Stivor, in the municipality of Prnjavor. This variety has no written tradition, and audio recordings are scarce.

Štivor village

The Štivor dialect is a Romance variety originating from the Valsugana valley in the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. During the 1880s, about a hundred families from the Valsugana valley, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, moved to present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina after devastating floods.
